6 Ways To Celebrate Mabon; The Autumnal Equinox
Lovers of all things pumpkin spice, rejoice!
When the mornings become crisp and damp; when your coffee is warm and comforting rather than iced and refreshing and the leaves begin to change colour whilst you’re not looking… Mabon is here.
By the end of September, we will be returning to the darker half of the year. Mabon may be a modern celebration (named in 1970), but it is inspired by the harvest festivals celebrated by different cultures throughout history. Traditionally, Mabon is when we celebrate the second harvest; associated with the inevitability of change, letting go, and gratitude for both the bounty of the harvest and for the sacrifices made along the way.
This year, we will be celebrating Mabon on September 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere.
The date isn’t set in stone though; it should be celebrated when the time is right for you. Perhaps it’s the first day you spot the changing of the leaves, or when you pull your favourite cardigan out of the closet. When it feels like the season is changing, that’s your Mabon, and here are six ways you can make the most of it.
Spend time with the people you love
When the sun is shining and the days are longer, we tend to spend much more time with our loved ones. As the nights draw in and the weather gets cooler, Mabon is a great reminder to keep our loved ones close and celebrate with them!
Prepare for winter
This change in seasons probably means a change in wardrobe, too. Switch up your lighter clothing for your cosies, and think about how you can turn your home into a comfortable and cosy sanctuary.
Share in your bounty
Whether you are financially rich, rich in love, happiness, or a literal bounty of crops, Mabon is the perfect time to share this with your nearest and dearest.
Express your gratitude
Some call Mabon “The Pagan Thanksgiving”, because this is the time of year when farmers reap the rewards of their hard work. That makes this a wonderful time to express your gratitude for the people that support you, the home that shelters you, and the land that sustains you.
The harvest!
You don’t have to be a farmer to reap what you’ve sown throughout the year. Take a look back at everything you’ve been working on and give yourself a moment to feel a sense of accomplishment for your personal growth. Why not take a drive or a walk and enjoy the sunset and the changing seasons? Remind yourself of your connection to everything; changing alongside the world around you.
Connect with the spirit of the season
Autumnal colours and scents, cosy nights in, warm and comforting food… just experience the magick of the season!
