What Is Chromotherapy?

Chromotherapy is colour therapy.
It’s a simple, holistic way of healing an imbalance of mental or spiritual energy that can lead to physical manifestation.

Colour therapy is an ancient practice. In Ancient Egypt, coloured stones, minerals, salves, crystals and dyes were used as remedies, and treatment sanctuaries were painted in specific colours according to their function. In Ancient Greece, colour was intrinsic to healing, with colour being used in oils, garments, salves, ointments and plasters.

In more modern(ish) times, apothecaries would carry coloured glass bottles of solarised water. It was believed that when exposed to sunlight, the water would absorb the vibrational energy of the bottle’s colour. This practice is still used by many colour therapists today.

Why is Chromotherapy good for me?

We all have a favourite colour, and so many aspects of our psychological functioning are affected by colour. Blue might make us feel serene or melancholy. Red might make us feed fired up, passionate, or it might heighten our anxiety. Colour is entirely subjective, but used therapeutically it can be a wonderful way of getting in touch with our emotions and feeling energetically balanced.

Many of us take the power of colour for granted, but by focusing on it we are able to live a more mindful and intentional life.

Is Chromotherapy a pseudoscience?

Certain colours evoke certain emotions in us. That’s a universally acknowledged fact.
Why did you choose that colour sofa? Why did you paint your bathroom blue? You might not be able to put it into words beyond “I liked it”, but the you have associated those colours with emotions and events. That’s not pseudoscience. That’s how your brain works.

Blue light blocking glasses can be helpful when you spend a lot of time in front of a screen. That’s colour therapy!
Green light is being experimented with as a way to treat migraines. That’s colour therapy!

What does a Chromotherapy session look like?

As a fine artist, qualified chromotherapist and IAM trained meditation facilitator, my approach to colour therapy is to use it as a form of guided meditation. Whilst colour light therapy is known to be very beneficial (and I will have a small light in the room for in-person sessions), visualisation is accessible to all; including the visually impaired or someone with a light sensitivity.

Before our session, I will provide you with a questionnaire to get a sense of your approach to different colours, and where we should be placing our focus. If you’re feeling like you lack energy and perceive orange as an energetic colour, we’ll be able to use that in our session. We’ll spend ten minutes making sure that you’re comfortable and ensuring that we’ve covered the important points in the meditation I’ve prepared, and then we’ll begin!

The session itself is a one-to-one guided meditation to re-balance your energy. I will slowly guide you through the visualisation of a colour spectrum, focusing in the places we’ve established will be beneficial to you. The meditation will last about thirty minutes, and you’ll also have the option to add coloured ritual oils and crystal therapy.

I offer Chromotherapy in-person (in Lytham St. Anne’s) or virtually, at an introductory price of just £20 a session.*
