Birthday Spell + Ritual Ideas For The Modern Witch
You might not have realised this, but pretty much everybody (even the people who denounce your craft) practices magick on their birthday! You deserve the absolute best on your big day, so here are some ideas for simple birthday spells to make the most of it.
AN ENCHANTED BIRTHDAY CAKE
You’ve probably been doing this since you were tiny, as it’s the most common act of magick there is! Making a wish before blowing out your candles is a time-honoured tradition in many households, so on your birthday this year, why not try doing it with real intention?
Before blowing out your candles this year, close your eyes.
Your wish should use positive verbs in the present tense, like “I am a successful business owner”.
Visualise your wish; feel it and smell it. Involve every sense.
Imagine that your whole cake is surrounded by a golden light, and as you blow out your candles keep on repeating that wish in your head.
Trust that you have been heard, and keep thinking about your wish as you eat your cake.
Don’t throw those candles out, though! Save them and light them on your altar next time you’re spending time focusing on your wish and let them burn down completely for best results.
BIRTHDAY TAROT SPREAD
Your birthday is the perfect time for divination, as you are at the crossing point between the past year and the next.
The Sunflower Birthday Spread by Barbara Moore is my go-to. With 13 cards, it also includes a number that is meaningful to me.

PRACTICE GRATITUDE
Sit down with your journal for a little while and write a list of everything you have received (not just physical gifts) and are thankful for. Your birthday is a time when you’ll be receiving so much: positive wishes, family dinners, birthday presents and free drinks to name just a few things.
When you’re done, light a candle and read your list out loud. Thank the Goddess, the Universe, or whatever you believe in for making it happen!
GIVE YOUR BIRTHDAY CAKE AS AN OFFERING
The best offerings are the ones that we value the most, and birthday cake is certainly something that I value a lot! Because birthday cake is something that we share with friends and family, it is already charged with positive energy, making the remnants of your cake the perfect offering.
Call on the entity you are working with, and place the cake in a small offering bowl. Describe your cake and explain that it is offered as a token of your love and gratitude. Take a small bite of the cake to symbolically share it, and leave the rest. Compost what is left the following day.
Which rituals will you be trying this year? I’ll be giving all of them a go!
